Let’s all go to Tesco’s!
Last night I took my first food shopping trip to Tesco’s by myself in the car. How exciting. It took me ages! My bro and his friend Alana were round for dinner then Daniel and Nath went off football and I went shopping. We left at the same time - around 19:45 and I didn’t get back home til 21:15. I don’t know what took me so long, think it was probably because I was taking my time and strolling through the aisles, browsing at what was on offer. My first experience of food shopping by myself - this was something new, and in contrast to being with Daniel who knows what we are getting, from where and how much - he always manages to remember what we need and what we have run out of as well. Me, I was walking round thinking oooh yes, lets buy that - how much?! maybe not…which is probably why Daniel does what he does so well! Or do we need that? Yeah I think we need that.. get home and we really don’t need it. When we are shopping together I always manage to go off somewhere and pick up something new to try or something we shouldn’t really be buying - and then there was me last night having to whole supermarket to myself! You can imagine! I am sure the novelty will wear off once I have been for the 20th time. But for now it’s fun. Some people are crazy shoppers, one lady was whizzing round like she had somewhere to be - maybe she had somewhere to be… then there was this little old man who was snail-pace shuffling around picking selective things from the shelves and carefully placing them into his basket. It amuses me when you start shopping and you end up taking literally the exact route as someone else and you smile once, then you smile twice, then you half laugh - then it just gets plain weird and you try to avoid eye contact…!! tee hee. Ok, so that has only happened to me once - and it was more her trying to avoid eye contact with me as she probably thought I was following her! Anyway, it all seemed fun and I was taking everything in my own stride that was until I got to the checkout and the cashier was not so pleasant. Which I tried to ignore - not literally ignore her, ignore the fact that she wasn’t being so pleasant. I approached the conveyor belt and double checked that she wasn’t about to close (have had that before when you start unpacking and they scream I’M CLOSING like they have lost the will to live and if they have to serve one more customer that day they fear they will never leave the place - which is all due) and starting putting my items on the belt. The man in front only had a couple of things so he was nearly done, off she goes on scanning through my items and pushing them out the other side while I am still trying to unload my trolley. Trying not to get unduely stressed I continue and ignore the silent pressure that is beginning to build up to get everything through quickly to then go pack everything to pay to get the bags in the trolley all ready for the next person to start coming through. It soooo wasn’t working, so once everything had been put on the belt I walked along and started packing my things. Thought perhaps she might help.. but she didn’t. Wasn’t worried because no one was behind, then someone else came and started to put things on the belt behind mine. The cashier then pushed my huge pile of things that was building up, looked at me, looked at the stuff and then tutted and huffed. So, I in the most unpatronising kindest, unstressed voice asked politely “would you be able to help me pack my things please?” another huff and a clearly not pleased “yes”. She fnishes scanning everything through and tells me the amount, after ‘filling’ two bags with 3 items in each she had clearly finished ‘helping me pack’ and processed the transaction. Then started putting the next lady’s items through and gave her a look as if to say “she’s taking her time” about me. There was me frantically putting my things in bags and all, apologising to the next lady. Then thinking why am I apologising, I’m not sorry, why am I sorry? Then she came and started to pack her things, reached across me to get to the bags and have a big tutt at me. I felt like standing back with my mouth wide open, and asking them if they wanted me to step aside!?! Anyway, I got on with my packing, all bags were in the trolley, checked I hadn’t missed anything. Went to walk off and said “thanks very much for your help” in the most sarcastic tone I could muster. I know, I know - probably shouldn’t have done that but I just couldn’t help it!! Other than that, it was fun for me! O, you have to laugh.
